The High Rise Passenger Steps permit entry to and exit from passenger aircraft having a doorsill height ranging between 2438mm and 5639mm (8ft and 18ft 6in).
At the top of the steps, either one of two side panels guarding the top platform can be unlatched and slid rearward to enable the aircraft door to be swung completely open.
The stairway is mounted on a wheeled, rugged chassis to which is fitted a steerable forecarriage turntable complete with towbar. Height adjustment of the stairway is provided by a hydraulic ram controlled by a 24V DC electro-hydraulic power pack. Once raised to the required height, the stairway is safely locked in position by a pair of spring-loaded pins that engage in a pawl frame assembly.
The steps are towed by a tug vehicle into approximate position, safely clear of the aircraft fuselage, and then inched into final position by an operator who controls a 24V DC traction motor which drives one of the rear wheels through a reduction gearbox. Such control, in forward and reverse senses, is via a hand control unit mounted on the towbar.
